then investigators found a woman's body files -- miles a way. what else they discovered inside that car. >> reporter: police are right now here at the headquarters interviewing the suspect. they believe the motive is that the suspect's girlfriend was trying to break up with him. >> he will be charged with murder. >> reporter: 39-year-old william -- is under arrest tonight charged with the murder of his girlfriend. the body of 33-year-old richy -- was found slumped in the front seat of a car. people say the apparent murder weapon was also inside the car. >> it appears to have been a blunt instrument. in the vehicle, we did find a metal bat, like a baseball bat, inside the vehicle where she was found with blood on it. >> reporter: investigators believe the murder happened in the early afternoon in vallejo

at the parking lot of the tennis courts. when vallejo detectives arrived, they found a pool of blood and the vehicle. at first they weren't sure if the victim was alive or dead. a few hours later, police 11 miles away reported the suspect showed up at a coworkers apartment, his girlfriend dead in the passenger seat. that coworker immediately called police and detectives say he surrendered and confessed to killing his exgirlfriend. >> so he is also married and it is his ex-wife who initially called police. apparently the suspect was driving away from the murder seen, called his wife, his estranged wife and said i have just murdered my boulevard and then she called 9-1-1. that's what set these events in motion. apparently, according to family members of the suspect, the woman was apparently told by a

9-1-1 operator there were no officers available to go to the scene. police very he mentally dispute that. they say they did go out to the victim's house and eventually found a murder seen there at the tennis courts. >> a twisted mess, for sure. thank you. from that to this, women in part of the bay area are now being told, make sure you know what is happening around you at all times. robert lyles tells us why. >> reporter: ask most to describe lake merritt. >> usually think it's safe. >> reporter: so safe, women work out alone and more often than not with head phones or cell phones. >> everybody, especially by themselves, are all walking around with an ipodin their ear. >> police are saying remove the head phones and keep the eyes peeled. the attacker seems to be using the cover of darkness.

well, after numerous calls from local politicians and a demanding public, tonight pg&e has posted those maps showing the locations of the riskiest pipelines in the state. pipe segments get on the list based on four criteria. will there or has there been third-party construction nearby. pipe corrosion, land movement near the pipe such as earth quakes. the pipe's age, design, what it's made of. pg&e's president says these factors impact the list constantly. >> this list is in flux. some items will move up and some will move down. >> he this say the san brown section was not on the top 100 list. when it finds out what caused that explosion, it might have to change is criteria. for now, you can find out if you live within 500 feet of a

high risk pipeline by calling a hotline number. checking bay area hoed lines now, the chp says a teenager was drunk when he crashed his car. grief counselors were on campus today, the first day of school since that crash on friday. the 16-year-old driver is being held on a list of charges including very electric hard manslaughter. two of the four drivers remain hospitalized. the first hov toll lane opened today. solo commuters can pay a fee to drive in that lane, which is otherwise reserved for car pools. there are -- is some confusion on the first day but traffic eventually moved fairly well. in san francisco, people unhappy with the tax. protested in front of a wine shop that he used to own.

protesters claim he has a conflict of interest. the mayor sold his shares of businesses in san francisco, including that shop. supervisors voted to add about 3 to 5 cents per drink to pay for alcohol abuse programs but still don't have the votes to over ride a veto. people in one bay area city took on the local government and it looks like they will win. they are fighting back against a six story jail. that's in the heart of the city's downtown. >> reporter: they are fighting the law. so what you want now is trans per and simon joins. >> yes. we want dialogue. we don't want to be told what's going to happen. >> the sheriff is considering building a new jail on wins low street. it would be six stories tall. conveniently located near the

president obama's aunts who has been living as inillegal immigrant in boston is speaking about her situation for the first time. she has been living in public housing and receiving disability. after a successfully fighting deportation, she was granted -- in the united states earlier this year. she tells a station in boston that she didn't ask for public assistance and that her ne ph ep did not influence officials. >> i did not ask for it. they gave it to me. >> she says that when she came to the u.s., she had planned to leave but got sick and was hospitalized. she says after that, she couldn't afford to leave. it's been a career move. mark says he will give up $30 million of his severance package from hugh lit pack arrested. he is doing it to settle a suit

bloody nose but what about the serious stuff. believe it or not, they can cut you open in space if they have to. >> they have medical kits up there with step by step instruction cards for just about anything that might happen. >> he says nasa keeps a fairly complete medical kit on board the shuttle and the space station, including defibrillators and if it's serious they can load you aboard a capsule and have you on earth in a couple of hours. >> i think that's the most likely scenario, taking people back to earth as opposed to sending up help. making headlines all week, the 49ers let their -- do the talking. that's next.
